his lovely old authentic Spanish blue green glass demijohn wine bottle has a 16 liter capacity as stamped on the neck, “
16 LXX
”. It is also stamped on the neck with the name of the manufacturer, “
Viresa
”, glass manufacturer in the region of Valencia. The bottom is stamped with the letter “C”. With its lovely rounded shape, this bottle shows some charming little air bubbles in the glass resulting from the
handblown
process. In Spanish, a demijohn is called a “
damajuana
”, from the French “
Dame-Jeanne
”, in honor of the first Queen Jeanne of Naples, Countess of Provence, who encouraged a Provencal glassmaker to create this type of wine bottle. This bottle was used -- as they still are today in Spain -- to preserve wine or fruit brandy (“eau de vie”). In excellent condition, this demijohn will be a handsome addition to your décor or your collection..
